Overview & Highlights

El Café De Donosti, nestled in the heart of San Martin Kalea in Donostia, Gipuzkoa, is a charming espresso bar that truly embodies the spirit of a local Basque café. Known for opening early—a rare find in the area—this cozy spot offers a welcoming refuge for early risers and travelers alike, especially those embarking on the Camino, who need a warm and satisfying start to their day.

Step inside and you’ll immediately feel the genuine warmth extended by the friendly staff, whose kindness immediately puts you at ease. The atmosphere is relaxed yet efficient, reflecting the rhythm of the neighborhood’s mix of older locals and curious tourists. It’s the kind of place where you order at the counter and pick up your food, embracing that authentic local café experience.

The culinary delights here focus on breakfast essentials done exceptionally well. Imagine biting into perfectly toasted bread topped with creamy avocado and delicate slices of jamón Serrano, a combination praised by many patrons for its fresh and hearty flavors. The avocado toast with jamón Serrano is a standout that offers a sublime balance of creamy, salty, and crispy textures. Aside from this, the sandwiches—freshly made with ripe tomatoes and carefully sliced ingredients—excel in delivering an honest, flavorful bite with every taste.

Guests also love pairing their meal with freshly squeezed orange juice or a robust espresso that kickstarts the senses—deep, rich, and comforting. The cafe manages to strike an admirable balance between quality and value, with complete breakfasts typically priced around 6 to 8 euros, making it remarkably affordable in a city known for pricier alternatives.

The genuine praise from customers speaks volumes. One visitor marveled at how this café offered a better-priced, equally delightful breakfast compared to busier spots nearby. Teens raved about it being the best breakfast of their trip, and early morning patrons found it the only welcoming cafe open before 8 am—a true blessing for those with early schedules.

While simple and unpretentious, El Café De Donosti’s attention to detail—the freshness of produce, the precision in toasting bread, and the genuine smiles—contribute to an unforgettable morning experience. Whether you stop by for a quick coffee to “get your day into first gear” or settle in for a wholesome breakfast, this espresso bar delivers warmth, quality, and an authentic taste of Donostia's morning charm.

One of the only cafes that open up early and serve good breakfast for a fair price. We were there at 7:30am. The staff is very friendly.

Great place for breakfast. Multiple breakfast options include coffee, fresh orange juice, and a different tostada. Their avocado with jamon Serrano toast is excellent. Around 6-8 euros for a complete breakfast.

Stopped here for breakfast before starting the Camino. Conveniently located and the only place open before 8am that I could find. Got there right at 7:30am and had a lovely breakfast. The women working are super nice - great start to my morning!

This is an excellent cafe, way better priced than the busier and higher rated cafes nearby. I took my teenage kids and they proclaimed it the best breakfast they had eaten on our trip. The lady serving was efficient and kind. Highly recommended.

We liked it here very much and had a good breakfast. They only forget the eggs for the avocado toast. Happens. thanks a lot again.

Sandwiches are excellent! The bread was toasted to perfection and the ham and salmon we got was fresh -- tomatoes and ingredients were sliced and cut only after you order. No table service and you will need to go to the counter to order. And you will need to go back to pick up your order as well. Much like many local places. Demographic is a mixture of older locals and tourists who pass by. Will come back to try another sandwich!

Good for a quick coffee and get your day into first gear
